Mechanism of action of Gemfibrozil :Gemfibrozil Increases The Activity Of Extrahepatic Lipoprotein Lipase (LL), Thereby Increasing Lipoprotein Triglyceride Lipolysis. Increase In The Synthesis Of Lipoprotein Lipase Thereby Increases The Clearance Of Triglycerides. Chylomicrons Are Degraded, VLDLs Are Converted To LDLs, And LDLs Are Converted To HDL. This Is Accompanied By A Slight Increase In Secretion Of Lipids Into The Bile And Ultimately The Intestine. Gemfibrozil Also Inhibits The Synthesis And Increases The Clearance Of Apolipoprotein B, A Carrier Molecule For VLDL.
Drug Interaction of Gemfibrozil :Gemfibrozil Is Known To Interact With Other Drugs Like Colestipol (HCl), Frusemide Or Furosemide, Phenytoin (Na), Pioglitazone, Repaglinide, Rosiglitazone (Maleate), Rosuvastatin, Tolbutamide, Torasemide, Warfarin (Na). Always Consult Your Physician For The Change Of Dose Regimen Or An Alternative Drug Of Choice That May Strictly Be Required.
Side effects of Gemfibrozil :Myositic Syndrome, Headache, Nausea, Impotence, GI Symptoms, Dermatitis, Gall Stones.
