Typical use Of Calcitriol :Calcitriol Belongs To A Group Of Medicines Called ‘vitamin D Metabolites’. It Is Used To Treat Abnormalities Of Calcium And Phosphate Metabolism Such As Bone Diseases In People With Kidney Problems (renal Osteodystrophy), And Weakening Of The Bones In Women After The Menopause (post-menopausal Osteoporosis).
Mechanism of action of Calcitriol :Calcitriol Promotes Calcium Absorption In The Intestines And Retention By The Kidneys Thus Increasing Serum Calcium Levels. It Also Decreases Phosphate Reabsorption By The Kidneys Consequently Decreasing Serum Phosphate Levels, Parathyroid Hormone Levels And Bone Reabsorption.
Drug Interaction of Calcitriol :Caution Is Advised In People Taking Medicines Containing Vitamin D (ergocalciferol And Colecalciferol); Diuretics Including Bendroflumethiazide, Chlortalidone And Indapamide; Digoxin Or Digitoxin; Medicines Containing Magnesium, Such As Antacids; Steroid Medicines, Such As Hydrocortisone, Prednisolone And Dexamethasone; Cholestyramine, Or Other ‘ion-exchange Resins’ (used To Treat High Levels Of Cholesterol In Your Blood);and Phosphate.
Side effects of Calcitriol :Side Effects May Occur Such As High Levels Of Calcium In Blood, Headache, Abdominal Pain, Urge To Vomit, Rashes, And Urinary Tract Infection.
