Typical use Of Ampicillin :Gram Positve Bacteria, H-influenzae, E-coli, Proteus, Salmonella And Shigella, Strep.viridans, Pneumococci, Gonococci And Meningococci.Urinary Tract Infections. Respiratory Tract Infections. Meningitis. Gonorrhoea. Cholecystitis. Subacute Bacterial Endocarditis. Septicaemias And Mixed Infections.
Mechanism of action of Ampicillin :By Binding To Specific Penicillin-binding Proteins (PBPs) Located Inside The Bacterial Cell Wall, Ampicillin Inhibits The Third And Last Stage Of Bacterial Cell Wall Synthesis. Cell Lysis Is Then Mediated By Bacterial Cell Wall Autolytic Enzymes Such As Autolysins; It Is Possible That Ampicillin Interferes With An Autolysin Inhibitor.
Drug Interaction of Ampicillin :Simultaneous Use With Oral Contraceptives May Lead To Increased Risk Of Breakthrough Bleeding And Reduced Efficacy Of The Contraceptive. Skin Rash Increased With Allopurinol. Probenecid Increases Blood Levels.
Side effects of Ampicillin :Urticaria, Eosinophilia, Leucopenia, Neutropenia, Seizures, Agranulocytosis, Hemolysis, Dizziness, Headache, Anorexia, Diarrhea, Abdominal Pain, Maculopapular Rash, Gastritis, Elevation Of Liver Enzymes.
